Competitor Link Gap Analysis
Find the specific links standing between you and your competitors.
Link gap analysis turns link building from a monthly quota into a targeted plan. If four competitors ranking above you all have links from the same trade publication, that publication is both demonstrably relevant and demonstrably willing to link to businesses like yours.
You probably need this if
- You do not know which links you are actually missing
- Link building feels arbitrary rather than targeted
- You need to prioritise limited link budget
- Competitors rank consistently above you across the category
What you get
- Referring domain comparison across your closest ranking competitors
- Gap list filtered to relevant, genuinely reachable domains
- Intersection analysis showing domains linking to several competitors
- Prioritisation by relevance, traffic and realistic winnability
- Suggested approach and angle for each priority target
How we approach it
-
Pick the right competitors
Compare against sites actually ranking for your target terms, not the businesses you consider rivals commercially, since those are frequently different.
-
Find the intersections
Domains linking to multiple competitors but not to you are the highest-probability targets, because they have already demonstrated willingness.
-
Qualify ruthlessly
Filter out directories, scrapers and irrelevant domains so the list reflects links genuinely worth pursuing.
-
Plan the approach
Define a credible reason for each target to link to you, since a gap list without an angle is just a list.
Link Gap Analysis: common questions
How many competitors should I compare against?
Three to five sites that consistently rank for your priority terms. Fewer produces a thin gap list; more dilutes it with domains only one competitor happened to acquire, which tells you little about what the category requires.
Are all gap links worth pursuing?
No. Many will be directories, scraped listings, or the result of a relationship you cannot replicate, such as a client case study or a parent company. Realistically only a fraction of any gap list is genuinely winnable.
What if I have no direct competitors?
Compare against whoever ranks for your target queries, even if their business model differs. The link profile required to rank for a term is set by the pages that currently hold those positions, whatever kind of organisation runs them.
