Server Log File Analysis For SEO
Replace assumptions about crawling with evidence of what actually happened.
Every other SEO tool infers what search engines do. Log files record it. They are the only source that shows precisely which URLs Googlebot requested, what status codes it received and how crawl attention is distributed across your site.
You probably need this if
- You suspect crawl budget is being wasted but cannot prove where
- Important pages appear to be crawled rarely
- You want to verify a migration was crawled correctly
- Googlebot may be hitting URLs you did not know existed
What you get
- Crawl distribution analysis by directory, template and status code
- Verified bot traffic separated from spoofed user agents
- Crawl waste quantified in requests and percentage of budget
- Orphan and never-crawled page identification
- Before-and-after crawl comparison for migrations
How we approach it
-
Collect and verify
Gather logs across a meaningful window and verify bot identity by reverse DNS, since a significant share of self-declared Googlebot traffic is fake.
-
Map crawl distribution
Break crawl requests down by template and directory to see where attention actually goes.
-
Quantify the waste
Identify requests spent on parameters, redirects and error pages, and express that as a share of total crawl.
-
Act and re-measure
Implement crawl controls, then compare a later log window to confirm budget moved where you intended.
Log File Analysis: common questions
How much log data do I need?
A minimum of thirty days for a stable picture, and ideally ninety for a large site. Shorter windows can be badly skewed by a single crawl spike or a temporary outage.
Can I get log files from shared hosting?
Usually yes. Most control panels including Plesk and cPanel expose raw access logs, though retention is often short. If you are on a CDN you will need logs from the edge as well, because it absorbs requests that never reach origin.
What does log analysis show that Search Console does not?
Search Console reports a sampled, aggregated view with significant delay. Logs give every single request with URL, timestamp, status code and user agent, which is the only way to see crawl frequency per URL or spot patterns Search Console never surfaces.
